To continue the cross-curricular Science and History theme the RSC has published a series of free science ideas webs covering topics from the Stone Age, all the way up to World War Two, and even the Space Age. We wrote one full of Viking ideas for science activities.

The 'Viking Ship' Hugin - on permanent display on the Pegwell Bay cliff top at Ramsgate is a replica Viking Longship. It sailed from Denmark to Thanet in 1949. This was to commemorate the 1,500th anniversary of the A.D. 449 landing of Anglo-Saxon chieftains Hengist and Horsa at Ebbsfleet, and the betrothal of Hengist's daughter, Rowena, to King Vortigen of Kent.

The ship's arrived at Viking Bay (previously Min Bay) Broadstairs in 1949 and was met by huge crowds. This was documented in a British Pathe newsreel, entitled 'Kent Welcomes Viking Invaders.'

Bjarni used to play on Hugin when he was a boy.
